I am repainting the bottom of my Hunter 23. Its year round in the waters of North Carolina in brackish water. I have about a few 5 gallon drums of some older paint from a friend. One is Brand: International 4050, Vinyl Antifoul paint, cuprous oxide 66.80 copper 58.45. Other is Brand: International Bra640 Red antifoul, Cuprous oxide 41.07 and copper 37.11. Which is better if any? I am sure there might be better out there but I am on a limited budget and thought if free worked then free it is! let me know pls! thanks

????

Your boat will take less than a gallon. Buy what is needed... and forget the old paint.

i will be lucky to use 1 gallow on 2 coats but its free and is supposed to be good but i have no idea. Any help would be good with my tight budget, its either buy botom paint or get my mast lights/vhf antenna working! lol

old paint

You need to know what you are "going over". Some bottom paints are not compatible with others. Interlux has a good has a good site... on what works over what. I don't have the link. (Google) I would put on the free paint (make sure you stir it up good and often)... and get your lights and VHF working. No sense sitting on the bottom with good paint... cause someone T-Boned you (lights out)... and you couldn't use channel 16!

Some things will grow on the bottom

no matter what you put on. If you are not racing then you can't hurt anything by using whatever is at hand. So it flakes off in a year, just put some more on.

Kind of not true....

I only use the best bottom paint, but I am fussy. You do have to use compatible paint. You are asking for problems if you don't!

The problem is not putting an ablative on hard paint, or putting ablative on ablative, the problem would be trying to put a hard finish on an ablative. The paint would peel in sheets if the previous paint was not removed first. Then again the problem with hard paint is that it goes on layer after layer because the antifoul properties fail after two years. After four years the hard paint looses it's bond and starts coming off in about 6 inch diameter chunks. Then the boat hull looks like it has leapersy, yet it is just a paint failure. I like ablative paint because it tells yo when it need done an prep is minimal. It is easily touched up yeatr to year. The point is you got free bottom paint. USE IT! Who cares. A good sailor can over come an bottom that is not fair. Use it, sail it, Run it aground! r.w.landau
