Anyone got a GOOD/FAST remedy for getting 15 plus coats of "Bottomcote" bottom paint off of an H22. This job svckz! West Marine saftey strip didn't even make a dent in it so far (in 48 hours) This is my first time stripping a fiberglass boat bottom.

I can only suggest muscle power. But Home Depot sells a product that is the same as "Peel Away" bottom paint remover. I guess it's needless to say that you should use an ablative paint on the bottom once you get this one stripprd away.

I know this may be a dumb question but if it is on that tight would an ablative paint stick to it? If would, maybe paint over it. ct

Get a qualified yard to sand it off, which will probably expose the gelcoat. Then put on three coats of Interlux 2000 barrier coat and two coats of ablative paint and you'll be good for two years. Peel Away and other chemical removers are tedious, messy, time-sensitive and need just the right temperature. On top of all that, they don't work!

Chuck: Getting bottom paint off depends a lot on what type of paint is on the boat now and how firmly it is adhered. Modified epoxy, for example, is VERY hard to get off. Soft sloughing and ablative paints come off relatively "easy." Most marinas rent out heavy duty sanders that are environmentally safe. Rent one if you don't have a heavy duty sander yourself. Start by using a scrapper to get any loose paint off. Often, with as many coats as you have on your boat, you'll be able to chip off big patches of paint right down to the gel coat. After that, get on your respirator, goggles, and Tivek suit, put some 40 grit sanding disks on the sander, and hit start. If you have never done this before, be careful not to cut into the gel coat once the paint comes off. This is a dirty job, but with luck you can do it in an afternoon on a 22 ft boat.

If you are going to sand, make sure you wear a respirator or somehting to cover your head and face most important. That paint will make you sick. Wear rubber gloves too. Look like a spaceman and you should be fine. As for sanding, wash off boat immediately and anything around that dust has settled on. Dust get s into pours and it is hard to clean up. We use scrappers. Like one fellow said, paint strippers just don't cut the mustard in my service yard.

I have never used it but Practical Sailor rates Peel-Away as the #1 Stripper. They say it works just as good as Marine Grade Peel-Away and doesn't cost as much. The concept looks very tidy. Brush on the gel and apply the paper over the gel and leave it. After the predetermined amount of time just peel off the paper and the bottom paint should come off with the paper. It states that it can go through a number of layers of paint. This sounds a lot safer than sanding and breathing in all that crud and dieing!
