I am mooring a boat for the first time this season in Staten Island waters. Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced bottom paint? Thanks.

Bottom Paint Used

Mark, I have used Pettit Trinadad for about 3 years and then switched to Pettit Trinadad SR about 3 years ago. Both did very well in RI waters (on mooring) on hard growth. the SR stands for Slime Resistant and it did better on soft growth. Last year I did only touch up, so it lasted 2 seasons. I will be applying a full coat this season. I found the best price of $140 per Gal. at Defender in Waterford, CT. I bought a Gal and a Qrt. Qrt. is about $43. That sounds high but the going rate at the other marine store was about $160. per Gal. It was worth the drive. Dick Carey S/V Puffin 1990 H-33.5

I use the West Bottomcote and get some slime and a few barnacles. Close to you on Cheesquake Creek. It works ok, no big growth.

Multi-season ablative

Try any of the multi-season ablatives. If you're like me and don't like to inhale poisonous sanded material and get enough other painting duty at home, its worth the extra up front $$$ for the stuff. Assuming whatever is on the bottom of your boat now is in reasonable shape, you don't have to do much more than rough up the surface with sandpaper before applying the new paint. With some epoxy paints, you have to remove the old layers. I used the West Marine house brand msa, and it did a good job for two seasons (I'm on LI Sound in CT). No hard growth at all. It was on sale and a good buy, about $90 for a gallon if I remember correctly. No similar bargains this time, so I'm trying Micron CSC this season. I had a coupon so I spent about $115 for a gallon. It was really easy to apply.

West Bottomcote

I used West Marine's cheapest house stuff last season because I needed to get something on in a hurry and it was available in Brown. I was surprised and pleased that I got no "beards", slime, or barnacles at all for the season (in Long Island Sound). When the cheapest stuff works exactly the way you hope, life is good...
