I am looking to get new bottom paint on my H31. Any recommendation on type of paint to use and a ballpark figure on how much this will run me? This is the first time I have gone through bottom paint.

$600 in Northern Cal.
Tom: We are paying about $600 for a bottom job in Northern Cal. This is price includes a pull, power wash, paint (4-5 qts - Pettit), paint supplies, disposal fees, zincs and a splash. I would think that you should be looking at about same price in your area (maybe $100 more). You may also want to have a second coat around the water line. The type of paint is best left to sailors experience in your area. Different paints work better in different areas.

Steve makes me glad I sail on Lake Erie! I do my own work and it costs me around $200. because I use a paint that is way too good for my boat. I am guessing that the West Marine brand would do as well and only cost me $100. Since we come out and paint almost every year a cheap paint is probably adequate. Last Spring I skipped painting and saw very little difference when we hauled out last Fall. Too late, the Trinidad SR sits in the basement awaiting application!

Go cheap!
I don't know what the water's like in San Diego, but here in Chesapeake Bay we have used the $49/gal Boat US paint with results as good as anything else we've used at twice (or more) the price. To have the yard do the bottom with Interlux or Woolsey costs about $300+ total.

Define Cheap
Tom and Tom, It all depends on how you define cheap. I just had my 376 done at Shelter Island Boatyard. For about $1,040 they hauled, power washed, sanded, applied an epoxy barrier coat, replaced all of my zincs and did a very neat, professional paint job. This is my second time with them and the last job lasted 3 years in San Diego. $1,040 may sound a little high but if it lasts three years that's pretty cheap in my book(both time and money). Since you're painting a 31' vs. a 37' obviously you'll spend less for the same job. Overall I'd say you could spend a few hundred and do the job every year or go higher end and not do it as often. At any rate, I would recommend the barrier coat before you repaint. My boat will soon be 6 years old and it's never even thought about a blister.

When you need to be pulled and splashed in addition to the bottom wash etc. you don't want to do this any more often than is really necessary. If you save 50 bucks a gallon on paint and need to be pulled every year, you are going to out of pocket more money! Now remember this is only my OPINION, not fact! But really, do check with locals on what is working in your area.

My experience has gotten me away from the hard paints because of the layer buildup, and I have gone to the ablative type. I have used Petit, Interlux, and believe the West Marine CPP brand (made by Interlux) is at least as good as any multi year ablative. More cuprous oxide than the others and costs less. My last haulout was after 3 years in the Chesapeake and Carolinas and it looked great. Prep is not so bad with the ablative either and I can't see paying the yard to prep/paint the bottom.

In 1999, we got caught in CA by the EPA ruling that only water-based paints could be used. They were definately poorer, but I put on three coats and the protection lasted 3+ years. This year, we used Z-Spar B-90 (The Protector, with very high Cupric content). This time, two full coats, with a third on the waterline and rudder. Expect to get 4 years. If you are putting forth all the effort and expense to haul, clean, repair, fair, mask, etc., another gallon of paint for the 2nd coat over top of all that prepared hull is not too much of an expense if it gets you another year or two.
