I just bought a 240 last fall and didn't paint the bottom. Two questions. One, I have some algea on the bottom that I couldn't get off when I took it out of the water. Does anyone know an easy way to clean the bottom before painting the first time? Two, does anyone have a good idea on how to paint the bottom with it on the trailer? I don't have access to a crane. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use light sandpaper to clean the bottom...

Determine the waterline(height) of the painted surface and tape the border. Repair any blisters . . .look up into the area where the swing keel retracts. Clean and wet-sand to lightly rough up the gelcoat surface. This will help hold the bottom paint. There are several post on HOW abot removing the bunk boards to paint. I usually use a crane at the marina . . .but if you have time go for it!

Painting on trailer

There was some recent discussion on this same issue for the Hunter 23. Check the Photo Forum also, as there was at least one picture. When you sand the hull, try not to take off any more gelcoat than you have to. Also, it sounds like your boat spends enough time in the water to grow weeds, so you may also want to consider an epoxy barrier coat (if you don't already have one). Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"
