VC 17

When I had trailer boats, used VC17, which dries super fast.. literally in minutes. I had four bungs, two each side, so dropped a set, painted, dropped other set.

Reverse Psychology

The same problem came up with my H23.5 so I supported the boat with some timbers and dropped the trailer by removing the wheels. It gave me that extra 6" to get the job done but it's still difficult to get to the CB pocket. Ken S/V WouffHong

Me Too!

Craig, I'm scraping the bottom paint off of my 1972 23', on a bunk trailer, right now too! I was planning on using two jacks, one on each end of the stub keel to gently raise it, as I provided additional supports under the bow and stern. I need to get the centerboard unstuck while I'm at it, so I need some extra separation between the keel and the rollers. Otherwise, Jim's idea about lowering the bunks is a great one! Man, I hate all the sanding! Let us know how your project goes, and I'll do the same.

Alternative idea

This won't get you under the slats, but the easy way to paint the bottom is to roll the trailer backward up portable steel ramps that your Dad used to use to change the oil on the '57 Chevy. This puts the boat higher up off the ground, making it a lot more accessible from below.

Bottom Painting

The way I've handled my O'22 is as follows: Clean and paint everything that is available; jack up one side of the trailer and insert two 2X4 supports fore and aft (I nail plywood plates to ends of the 2X4's to distribute force on the hull); lower the trailer and unbolt and remove the side support which gives full access to the unpainted surface on that side. After everything dries, I reverse the procedure and then do the other side. I don't bother with the bottom of the shoal keel (I generally run aground sufficiently frequently to keep it barnicle-free!!)

There are a couple of slick ideas that were posted within the last couple of days. I'm about to freshen my VC17 too. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"
