Bottom Paint

I have a new boat that got bottom painted last April. Do I need to have it painted again next spring before launch (maybe ablative paint)? I had them use non-ablative paint since I thought it would be better as a first coat. I was just wondering if I need to bottom paint every year coz some of my boating friends say yes and some say no. Thanks!

If ablative - no

In a nutshell, if you used ablative paint, such as Micron CSC, then you do not have to paint in the spring unless it is wearing away and you have exposed places. Non-ablative paint, such as Interlux Fiberglass Bottomkote, must be sanded and repainted each year.

Think Paul is right.

I did not paint this past Spring. My modified-epoxy(non-ablative) looked good prior to launch. But I am noticing more slime this year. Is the copper too thin or was it the 90 degree temperatures for six weeks? I'll stay with the Trinidad SR because after the first year haul out it was clean as a whistle. And it is smoother and faster than ablative. :) The advantages of ablative are that it does not loose its effectiveness while on the hard and does not have buildup. The buildup of modified-epoxy is not an issue with me because I sand anyway(with a vacuum sander).

My experience..

I'm in Banegat Bay NJ area. I have usually used Micron CSC Extra (an ablative). Mostly because I didn't have the time, I ended up going almost 3 years since my last haul out. normally I try every other year and go "prop diving" in the odd year. The bottom was surpringly clean but my prop was a totally encrusted bow tie. I scrape and burnish the prop with a wire drill bit, spray outboard prime on th the prop and then spray a few coats of outboard antifouling. This time I tried that NEW Micron CSC Extra with Biolux as we tend to see slime growth more than barnies. I'll let you know how it performs in a year and a half. Years ago on my old boat , I had paid the yard to do the job and the college grads must have forgotten to stir the can as the entire bottom looked like a bee hive- They told me on the subsequent haul out when we discovered the bee hive that the "antifoiling failed" ..... Yea Right ;< And 1 coat was probably applied too.
