Bottom paint?

PLease see the attached photos. This is the hull of a 1994 Hunter 26 that is for sale. I know the rough texture increases friction but is there anything else that I should worry about? It looks to me to be the result of sloppy work. Is this something I can sail with until I can afford to have the bottom sanded and recovered or will it casue some other damage? This is on an otherwise perfectly maintaned boat that I am considering buying. Appreciate any input.

Paint Build up

All your pictures show is just the buildup of multiple layers of paint.
It you are not racing, I would not worry about it at all. Just be sure there are no blisters.

If you do want to remove the paint, I have had good luck with Marine Safety Strip. Nontoxic, apply like cream cheese, cover with a special paper, wait for a number of hours based on temperature, then just use a scraper and the paint comes off.

Sure do recognize that, years of modified-epoxy bottom paint without the in-between sandings. Good news is that it is hard and flaky and comes off with a paint scraper and LOTS of work. I did that on my 37-footer, right down to bare gelcoat.

Then I continued to use that paint but sanded every spring before application. The problem is that the paint builds up more than you think that you are sanding off. So in Oct. 2008 while in a yard in NC I had them sand it. Then I switched to an ablative.

No problem - enjoy your boat. At some point, you may want to strip it, barrier coat it, and repaint. She will be a bit slower with that bottom job, but if you are not racing you won't notice.

Do you need to re-paint every year if you are in fresh water? Mine has the build up, but generally is blue over the whole hull, I am just not sure what needs to be done? Dan

If you decide to put on more than one coat of ablative paint consider using a different color for each coat. That way a quick examination will reveal roughly how much is left.
