can you check w/ some marina service yards... maybe they have some leftovers you can have cheap.. or the next guy getting a bottom painted will sell you his left overs cheap... or a Craislist adv...

a large boat will buy by the gallon or 5 gal's... once opened it doesn't last long.

another thought is trading with the guys doing the jobs.. I worked at a yard in college, and the guys working there were always doing side jobs on weekends... (and their boats, sometimes flipping them)

I'm sure no expert, but I do read a bit... I would think about epoxy paint.

if are going to spray, you can spray gelkote, but you have to clean the gun fast or get some cheap ones... even a few of those disposable ones. (rattle can type sprayer, but you add the mix)

or just barrier coat the bottom, and put an epoxy bottom paint or alabative on it.

but and Enamel? hmmm... I'd really ask on some other forms first... (like main board here, sailnet, or the boats us forum.)

One good thing about how long repairing the hull and finding the right paint is taking, is that it gives me plenty of opportunity to read and learn. Many good points in those links.

Actually, I'm not too sure about the paint: just trying to get reasonable bang for buck.

When I say enamel, I mean two-part polyurethane enamel paint. It has to be mixed with MEK catalyst and to me that sounds like it's something akin to fiberglass resin? Should be durable, no?

I looked at epoxy paints. Maybe harder and stronger, but does it dry out with that slick blush that other epoxies have?

The local shop, Force Marine, only sells gelcoat. Do I want to gelcoat this old boat? I don't know. I'm still learning.

Just got home from work. About 12:40 right now. Gotta crash and get up tomorrow to do more on the hull before going back to work (Saturday).

Still hoping to find something that will work well, not cost the mint, and will last a reasonably long time.

Have more questions but gotta get some sleep. More, later.

The marine topside paints can go on with a roller and tipped with a brush.....

....and seem to flow out and look quite nice. Google "roll and tip paint". I'd stay with proven marine paints that have been designed for the job myself.

I'd concentrate on the bottom and leave the top above the waterline for later. Then you will have seen how much you like sailing and if this is the boat for you and it will stretch your expenses out,

Personally, with all the blister repairs it might just be better to seal it and cover it... something flat not glossy. I'd do a barrier coat for sure, and then some alabatives.. or the harder epoxy type sumner used. it will look fine for a 30/3 finish. (30' at 3 knots

-alabatives are messy and rub off, but you can go over them next season no problem -some others need to be scuffed or sanded. and price wise not too bad.

MEK is a thinner, not a catalist. good for cleaning the hull since it evaporates slower than acetone.

I have sprayed gelkote in those disposable sprayers, but nothing this large. -runs are the problem.... (you have to use gelkote with wax!)

Mostly, it depends what you are going for. some guys have done high gloss hulls and they do look great!


-ps: Sumner, just a hint of cooler weather this weekend, when the storm (earl) drew the humidity north. 92 today, but lower humidity makes is seem much cooler (like mid 80s) ... but that probably wont last.... how the project going?

Okay, my bad. I meant to say MEKP (Methyl Ethyl Keytone Peroxide) the catalyst used with polyesther and vinylesther fiberglass resins, Bondo, etc. I was looking at some two-part polyurethane paints (gotta find that link again online) and MEKP was the second part used to activate the paint. With that in mind, I was figuring it must cure out something like fiberglass resin, and thus be pretty strong for boats?

I was checking up on self-polishing, ablative bottom paints, and read that they sort of "self-reduce" like a bar of soap. I can see where this would cut down on sanding time next time I paint, but is that really what I want for a small trailerable boat that's going to spend most of the time on the dry? I don't know.

The more I think about gel coat, the better it sounds in general for boats. But you're right: cleanup could be a problem; and I don't know if it's the best way to go for this lil' ol' boat. Application seems to require a bit of work; and I'm wondering if a super high gloss finish is what I want on a hull that's had a lot of surfacing done to it. I mean, every slight imperfection is going to show in the blaze.

There's a guy right now on Craigslist with an unopened 5 gallon can of red bottom paint for $395; considering the cost of shipping or buying at the boat supply shops on the leeward side, that might be cost effective; but I don't need that much paint for the bottom; don't know what brand it is; would still have to ship it inter-island; etc. etc. etc. I will check with the local shops to see what I can find in leftover paint, though.

Still looking, still thinking, still filling and sanding. And still learning, thank you!

About 98% of the repair work is below the boot stripe. Maybe I can just do the bottom and worry about the sides later. I'll look into it. Thanks!

We've had some low 50's at night.

Solar panels are mounted, not wired, I still have to make the two high shrouds, other shrouds and backstay and forestay are done. I'm making the two bow rollers for the claw and Manson now with another day or so to finish. Ruth is about 1/3 done with the bug.

I still have to mount the internal gas tank, do wiring, make some simple mounts for more water containers under the V-berth, a couple other smaller jobs and then paint the bottom. I guess I'll be done when I finish the last thing :cry:. We are both wore out, but we will get down there yet,
