I'm working on sanding and prepping the bottom of my H23 to paint. I was planning to support the sides and lowering the bunks to paint under them. I have read past posts and jave seen pictures in the archives of doing this. But my trailer (original 1985) has one piece supports that can't be lowered. As I see it without lifting the boat off the bunks, are there any other options I can do with it? I am working on it in my driveway. Thanks, Mike

How about this

Do everything but the bunks. Go to the lake and launch the boat and get her back on the trailer off center to expose the areas under the bunks. Drive home and paint. Worked on my San Juan 21. Tim R.

What I do...

Depending on how high your boat sits at the transom, you may be able to do what I do. I lower the front of the trailer as far as possible using the dolly wheel crank which causes the stern of the boat to raise higher. I have two 55 gallon drums which I place under the transom with 2 2"x6" boards laid across the top of the barrels. I cover the 2x6's with an old bedspread to keep from damaging the hull. Then I go to the front of the trailer and use the dolly wheel crank to raise up the trailer as far as I can safely do. Then I have a support box made from 3/4" plywood which I use to support the bow. You should be able to then lower the dolly wheel jack till the bow is sitting on it's support. Continue lowering the front of the trailer till you have enough room between the bunks and the hull to complete your painting. I have used this method on both of the boats I have owned, a 26 Mac and a 24 Venture. Happy Sailing!
