I think I've got enough info on the proper paint, now has anyone painted the bottom while on the Venture trailer? Can the boat be jacked up at the keel? Normally we store boats with the weight on the keel but with this boat I'm not sure. As always any help will be appreciated, I will also call Hunter next Week.

Lifting the H216 Off the Venture Trailer

I have lifted my H216 off the venture trailer to adjust the bunks. At stern, just behind the bunks, I build my "jack it up" structure. I made a solid base for my hydraulic floor jack about 16" high floored with 3/4" piece of plywood. I placed my substantial floor jack on this base. I then used a good, solid 4x4 chunk some 3-3 1/2' long on top of the floor jack. Because the bottom of the hull curves, I placed 2-3 folded up towels on the ends of the 4x4 then carefully jacked it up. The weight of the trailer ended up being on the towels with no part of the hull resting on the 4x4 itself. The final structure ended up being quite solid...surprisingly so. Jacking up the bow to get it off the bow rest is much easier.

Hunter's Response to Lifting H216 off Trailer

Joe, I would be interested in what Lind at Hunter tells you about lifting the boat off the trailer. Lamar

Lifting the 216

Lamar Lind says don't lift y the keel - use a covered piece of 2x6 and jack up either end. Joe M

Lifting the H216

Joe, Thanks for the info. Do you plan to jack up both ends of the covered 2"x6" placed face side under the bow/stern of the boat? ...or will you just put a single jack on the 2"x6" near the center line of the boat and jack it up that way? Lamar

Ranger Paul Help! Your system sounds great but I'm a bit confused (senility setting in). As to the jack, I'm assuming it rests on the ground, not the trailer, right? Also, you say after jacking, the weight of the trailer rests on the towels? or did you mean the hull? Thanks! Jacktar.

Jacking

I plan to paint all of the exposed hul and then jack up the bow and paint. - repeat the same process on the rear. I am told by Hunter that the keel is not strong enough to take the stress but the hull itself is very strong and should be no problem. Of course Hunter will not gurentee this procews, so I will go very slowly and keep everyone informed. Could not paint this weekend due to very high winds and cold temps ( in the 30's) in SW Florida. I was more worried about the wind since it was kicking up all sorts of junk which was sticking to the paint. Joe M

Jacking Up the H216 on Venture Trailer

Hmmmm.... Lack of clarity is one of my strong points! ;-) I used a floor jack to jack up either the bow or stern. For the stern, my jack could not achieve the height desired so I "build" an elevated platform the jack could sit on. I had some really tall car ramps so I used those then placed plywood on top of the ramps. Next I placed the jack on the plywood. On top of the jack I placed a 3-4' long piece of 4x4 I had laying around. I placed a couple folded towels on top of the ends of the 4x4. The 4x4 went from port to starboard. For clarity, my structure consisted of car ramps, plywood, floor jack, 4x4 then towels. When I jacked up the jack, the towels contacted the hull first, one on the port side and one on the starboard side. As I continued to jack it up, the towels compressed but the 4x4 never contacted the hull in the center. That is, the boat weight was on the starboard towel and the port towel. This worked great and the boat was quite stable. The bow was a lot easier as I could place the floor jack on the ground. I placed a little chunk of wood on top of the jack then a folded towel on the wood so I didn't scratch the hull and jacked it up...pretty much like the bow rests on the bow trailer bunk.

It's Done!!

The boat jacked up very easily. The Shark Grey Interlux looks great, but expensive! Thanks to all for all the input, it was very helpful and I hope this activity helped others. Joe M (Shazaam)
