Bottom paint removal

It is that time, I have several coats of bottom paint that I need to remove this fall, I have done the sanding routine, the peel away thing and the scraper thing too, on other people's boats. I am leaning to the paint remover, has anyone a better idea? I had the bottom sandblasted about 6 years ago, that was the easiest but was also costly.

Bottom Job

Just had a complete bottom job done on my h30. There was many years of paint on the hull. Had it sand blasted, an epoxy barrier coat applied, primer and ablative paint sprayed on. Was not cheap, but putting new paint on top of old only to have it all fall off didn't seem reasonable, either. There is going to come a time in the not too distant future when sandblasting hulls will be illegal. Do it now and get it done right. Roland S/V fraulein II

Do you mean ALL the paint?

Did that Spring of 2000 with the scraper and sander routine. But if you only have six years of paint do you need to go to bare glass? Seems like sanding would do it unless you are changing paints. My plan is to sand each season and then one coat of Trinidad SR. This stuff works so well that one good coat with a yearly sanding should prevent buildup. I really like the hard and fast modified epoxy. Did not even paint this past Spring and only had a little slime, no other growth(came out Wednesday). I use a sander with a vacuum bag and all the protection.

NO SWETT

I used a product called "NO SWETT" and it was great. The yard sprayed it on, (although the can says it can be rolled or brushed) my crew of three waited about 25 minutes, and with 4" putty knifes we had about 12 years of bottom accumulation off in about 30 minutes. ( it's a 34) A little messy, because the paint comes off in strips which fall all over you, but all we had to do was roll up the plastic and dump it. About the time we had 2/3 of the boat done we came up with a neat system, shoulder to shoulder and scrape in front. A couple of "going overs" with thinner and it was to the original bottom, with a slight blue tint. I screwed up by putting an ablative paint on, while I should have put a hard paint on and then ablative over it. Good luck and have fun!!
