We have an 18 month old H260 with a coat of Micron CSC that is starting to flake off in places. I suspect that the dealer did a crappy job of removing the mold release from the new hull before painting..(or he did no removal) (FYI Our H260 was the last Hunter that this dealership sold!! and Dave Condon..if you are reading this.. we should have bought from you..!) Now to my question..I would like to repaint our boat including an epoxy barrier coat..How much of a project is this? I assume all the old paint needs to be removed..and how do that without voiding the warranty? Thanks in advance... Stephen Dawes H260 Tender Morsel sdawes@ix.netcom.com

Flaky paint

We had the same problem with our H26 when we had the bottom painted with CSC Micron. The job was done by a certified interlux boatyard. Fortunately, the yard stood by their work and repainted it. Interlux donated the paint. However, this spring there were a few flakes leftover from the winter. We scraped off the loose flake then used the Interlux cleaner and pre-paint goo to fix the spot. Please note that the pre-paint goo is some of the most toxic looking/acting stuff I've everseen. It degenerated a pair of chemical resistant glove in about an hour. That stuff if really hard to work with. I would suppose that even the great Dave C.'s crew gets a few flakes from the trailerables. Mark Mark

bottom job

My 33.5 came with Micron CSC on it last fall when I bought it. It already had flaking then, and is worse now. The rudder was so bad you could peel the paint off with your fingers. After having VC-17 on my last boat (h28.5) I can't see any reason to use anything else, at least here in the Great Lakes. The ease of preparation, application, durability, and slickness are unmatched. So you know what I'll be doing next spring. I hope the Micron CSC comes off easy then.

Bottom Painting

I hit the wrong key on the first response. OOPS! All paints are good but the most important thing is the preperation. If not done correclty, then the paint will fall off. Sometimes, there might be a bad can of paint and the proper preperation does not matter; however, in that situation, all the paint maufacuturers will stand behing their product no matter who it is and this is based on experience. To address Mr. Dawes complaint, I would suggest calling Hunter and see if they have any suggestions. IF sanding is the only way, would the warranty be held valid if epoxy barrier coatings were applied and by whom. Is there any type of bottom wash to remove the paint and if so, what is it and the precautions so one would not endanger the environment. Feel free to pick my brains.
