Bottom paint problem on new rudder

I had the bottom painted last March before I took delivery from the local dealer on my new H240. As the season progressed, I noticed that a lot of the paint on the rudder was coming off. When I pulled the boat out of the water in October, most of the bottom paint on the hull looked faded, after cleaning, but still adhered to the fiberglass nicely. However, the rudder lost about 50% of the paint over the entire surface. 1. Should buy some paint and touch up the bottom paint on the hull? I am worried about the appearance of new paint against the faded paint (now light gray). 2. What should I do with the rudder? Obviously the paint used last time did not "stick". Should it have been sanded first? It the difference in surface texture between the hull and the rudder part of the problem? Should I use a different type of paint? Thanks for any advice

It sounds like the mold wax was not removed which would account for the paint coming off. You will need to remove all of it to start off with. Wash with acetone and use gloves. Then take a scoth brite pad and etch it. Then clean again with acetone. Then just paint. If you hve access to wax remover and also a non sanding primer(Petit 699)then use that. If you do put on the nonsanding primer, the instructions say within four hours. Follow my crazy way and apply while it is still a little tacky. What ever you do, wear gloves and do it outside. be safe and Happy sailing. Crazy Dave Condon

no paint on rudder

On my previous boat, a H240 the rudder had bottom paint on it. Any time you brushed against it some of it came of on you. Thats how that paint works. It is supposed to do that. Why paint it at all? I leave my rudder always in the up position when the boat is not in use. The slight build up of whatever can be brushed off easy.

Rudder turbulence

Remember that your rudder has the task of applying pressure against the water, and this will wear down the paint thickness quickly. Extra coats may be required, along with areas like the cutwater and leading edge of keels and skegs.
