Bottom paint on 222...original is coming off

Hi,We just purchased a 1984 Oday 222. She is beautiful and well maintained, perfect interior. Her hull is good, but the sooty black bottom paint came off with using 3M hull cleaner and the car wash. It appears to be the original bottom paint. Any ideas what kind of paint? Or does it matter? A marine store in our town suggested sanding and scrubbing the remaining paint from the boat, and going back over with an anti-fouling bottom paint. Will she still be trailerable after that? We are planning on keeping her in the water during the warm months, and dry storage (on her trailer) during the winter. Any advice is greatly appreciated.Also what about the color? Her hull is creamy white with dark royal blue stripes. The tread areas on deck are tan. I think the black is UGLY, and would like to give her bottom a fresh look, like red, bronze, or blue. Any ideas? ThanksMB

anti-fouling paint

Interlux has just come out with "dark blue" anti-fouling paint, which would look pretty good with your colors, IMHO. According to product specs, it can take relaunching. And it's easy to apply.

Bottom paint

As long as you stick to ablative type bottom paints you can launch and haul as needed without degrading the effectiveness of your bottom paint. Interlux CSC series products, and West Marine CPP are my favorites. Red is available from each. West Marine's blue is pretty light but Interlux has a darker option.In preparation for painting the surface you're painting on needs to be solid. If you paint on flaking paint the whole thing comes off. So - use a screw driver or spackle knife to knock and pry off and loose stuff. Sand until smooth. Wear propper respiratory and skin protection. Then repaint.Justin - O'day Owners' Web
