Bottom Paint More Questions

I recently asked some questions about bottom paint on my 1987 H23. The previous owner always used Fiberglass BottomKote and the bottom is in bery good shape. After reading the earlier responses, I decided that switching to a multi-season ablative might be the way to go. A rep from Interlux was in one of the local boat stores. I talked to him about his recommendations and he said that I should just do a light sanding with 80 grit and then apply CSC right over the exisitng BottomKote. An earlier post suggested removing it completely.He also suggested using 2 coats. Others have said to use 3 coats. With 2 coats, one gallon should be enough but for 3 coats, I'd be into a second gallon. Throw in the "alternating colors" approach and the amount to buy gets even more confusing.What would y'all do? Another week or so and it will be warm enough up here to paint (I hope).Thanks.

I did the same thing on my H240. Two years ago I switched to Micron CSC. I did a light sanding. I did not remove the entire coat. I applied two coats of Micron. The Micron was a different color than the original paint. I did this so I would know when I needed to reapply. Job lasted two seasons. I sail on the Chesapeake Bay. I keep my boat in the water 6-7 months a year and on the trailer the rest of the time. This year I will power wash and reapply two coats (no sanding ever again). 1 gallon does the trick. After two seasons I still had a decent bottom job. Probably could have made it 1 more season, but why push it.

Sean/s boat was orginally painted with micron csc. You are correct to use csc.Generally, the use of abblative paintson trailerabe sailboats is an important issue. Most paints when left exposed to air for more than 60 days will loose their effectiveness. That is not true for Mircron CSC which is why i use it. Two coats on the bottom and one additional coat around the water line is the way to go. You will have difficulty painting the centerboard.I urge caution using these paints and any of the products as they are hazaordous to your health. Please wear saftey glassed and goves. If sanding the old paint off, wear a respirator.In years past, I did not but finally doing so., I must say that this may be one of the causes why I lost my brain cells. Thanks for all the advise. I'll definately use all the proper protective garb. (Having a wife who's an RN, I'm used to be slapped upside the head any time I try to do something that might be hazardous health-wise.)My boat doesn't have a centerboard but instead has the fixed wing keel. It also looks like it was painted with the same BottomKote. CSC will work on that as well, right?Thanks again.Hopefully, in a year or two, I can start answering other folk's questons.Joel
