I am working on changing the bottom paint on my Hunter 23 steel keel to VC17. Has anyone used this paint on the steel part of the Hunter 23. From what I can tell, the steel keel looks like it has a gell coat finish on it, so I can put VC17 on it. VC17 recommends against using it on steel, so if the keel is not actually protected with something, then I don't think I can use VC17. Any advise or comments will be welcome.

VC-Tar

I used VC 17 on 23 for years but you must first put on VC Tar. Then the 17 will stick to it. Its messy stuff and takes a little time to cure. The only problem I had with the 17 is it does not have allot of antifouling in it. I did not use it on my 25.5 for that reason. Cliff

Interlux Interprotect 2000E

I was instucted to use Interlux 2000E on the keel as a primer then VC17. I can not tell you the results at this time as this is my week end project. Since Interlux also makes VC17 I suspect I can trust their advise.

Not Salt Water

Bill, since your not in salt water I 'd go for the vc-17, especially if you are planning on racing it. The keel will need a good barrier coat to seal it. Doubt that it has a barrier coat now, unless some one epoxied it before you got. I'd follow the local marine centers advise along with paint manufacturers recommendations. Good Luck and great sailing.

Read my post on smaller boats concerning painting the steel keel of the h23.

h23 keel

The h23 keel is 800 pounds of cast iron. I also had rust every year until two years ago when I had the keel ground to bare metal, added four coats of epoxy barrier paint and two coats of Micron bottom paint. She had no rust this spring after two years in the saltchuck. s.v. Miss Brandy
