Bad primer

Jim, I had the same problem on my 2000 Beneteau 361. Apparently that year Interlux had a problem with their primer that caused the bottom paint to flake. I would find out from the previous owner if they used Interlux primer. Interlux was really very good about fixing the problem. Good luck Charlie Gruetzner S/V Angels' Grace

Bottom paints

Jim, Let's look at two different things. 1. The bottom coat should be applied within the window that the barrier coat recommends. That is, it should not be applied to soon or to late. The type of barrier coat should have those times on the label of the can. 2. The type of bottom paint. Some of the cheaper paints are one season paints. The other thing is that some paints are meant to be put on and the boat left in the water and other piants are better for trailered boats. If the boat is pulled, the paint gets brittle and loses it bond. Some paints have a launch time. The boat has to be in the water before 60day . Some paints say that you can't put the boat in the water for a number of days. If you keyword search for Interlux Paints or Pettit Paints, they have good sites and are very informative about application and which paint is good for which condition. I hope I didn't confuse you but there are many perameters. good luck in your quest. r.w.landau
