Bottom Paint Catalina 22

In short, what bottom paint for multi-season use? Non Copper Interlux (albative I think) or with Copper like Pettit or others? I'm in fresh water and boat stays in year road except for maybe a time or two. Want paint to last 2-3 seasons.

Also will one gal do 2 coats on Catalina 22 bottom?

Any painting tips?

Do you plan to use a epoxy barrier coat?

VC 17 is a very good fresh water paint, if you should decide to use VC 17 all traces of the paint you now have will have to be completely removed. One can easily get two years using VC 17. Very thin, easy to apply. Also easy to apply another coat when the time comes.

VC Offshore, is another choice should you give thought to using it, once again all traces of what there now have to be completely removed.

Three quarts of VC 17 will give you several coats if applied by manufacturer instructions.

But in the end it comes down to your choice of which paint you use. Do the research then you'll know which bottom paint will be best for use on your boat.

Allan, we sail on lake Ontario and the bottom paint that most use is VC-17. As Ken said all traces of other types of bottom paint must be removed before you apply VC 17. One nice thing about this paint is that you can apply it over and over again with out the scraping that other paints need from time to time. The word "season", has many different meanings. A season for me in upstate NY is not the same as yours in OK. It seems to me that I read somewhere that VC 17 is good for about 12 months. Someone else may have a different number than that, but I think it is in the ball park. I use two quarts when I paint the bottom. I do not paint the rudder. I have a kick up rudder, and when not in use, it is out of the water. This paint also dries VERY fast, so you can paint and launch quickly.

I got 3 coats of VC17m from 2 quarts on my Capri 22 last year. Being ablative it really depends on how much sailing you do and whether you scrub your bottom on how long it will last. Even with the VC17 I get some crusty stuff in the crannies of the darker areas underneath.

west marine "bottom shield" I did 1 coat in red then 2 in blue.1 quart will barely cover the whole bottom. YMMV Sid

I would take a "local conditions matter" approach to this, though a VC-17 recommended for fresh water is probably a good choice. Finding out what folks in your area have had the best experience with is almost never a bad idea...

I don't even use bottom paint - even though I stay in the water for the season. The lake that I sail on is cold enough and the season short enough that it is not really needed. I just pressure wash off the slime at season's end and then pay the local yard <$40 to clean the dark scum off.

You probably NEED bottom paint...

Defender has Interlux Ultra-Kote on sale right now for $55 a gallon. I ordered some last night for my C22.

I use ACT Ablative with slime fighter for my Oday 25 that stays in the ocean for extended stays.
