my oday 23 has a keel steped mast in the bottom of the boat where the mast goes theres a steel channel with 2 pins the bottom of the mast has nothing on it does the mast just between the 2 pins or am i missing something that goes on the mast to lock it in any info will be greatly appreciated

Most O'days have what is called a tabernacle on the cabin top. It looks somewhat like a u channel, about 4" wide and 6-7" long. The sides face up. There is a matching piece bolted to an insert that goes into the bottom of the mast. There are holes so you can pin the two pieces together to keep the bottom of the mast in place. IT WILL NOT hold your mast up. You need the side shrouds (wires) and fore stay and rear stay (wires) to hold up the mast.
You say it is a keel stepped mast? Sounds strange. May be custom?

To upload photos you can use "quick reply" or "reply with a quote." If you use "quick reply" just type out the words in the text area and then click on the "go advanced" tab and scroll down after the window comes up.
Then click on the "Upload photos or files Here" tab. A window will come up with five tabs that read "Browse". Click on the first tab and navigate to the pictures in your PC that you want to upload. If you keep your pictures on a flash drive, plug the drive into a USB and find the drive and open it.
If you keep your pictures in "My Pictures", just click on to "My Pictures" and find the picture that you want to upload to this site and then click on to the "Upload" tab.
You can upload as many pictures as you want. After going through the five "Browse" tabs. You can click on to the "Preview Post" tab and start all over again, adding more pictures. When you're done, just click on to the "Submit Reply" tab.
You can go back later and omit pictures or correct typos and edit. Just write in a reason for editing. You can also delete the post.
I am not sure about the ODay specifically but most keel stepped masts just rest in or around a plate or socket. As long as it is restrained from moving laterally there is no need to hold it down as the rigging does that. Hope that helps
The very first O'day 23s (1972?) had a keel stepped mast. I know of at least one O'day 23 "specials" with fin keel from late 70s. One still sailing - and looking good with 30 year old Imron paint job - on Lake Red Rock in Central Iowa.

It's possible that there was some kind of extrusion at the foot of your mast and it's missing. The only guy I know who could answer that question is Rudy at D&R Marine. http://www.drmarine.com/products.asp?cat=172
If worse comes to worse you could construct your own mast step. I used similar material to make my own mast extrusion a couple of years ago and it works like a champ. A set up for your keel stepped mast would be even easier to construct.

I know we are talking about an O'day, and what looks to be a Dwyer mast extrusion, but I know that my SuperSpars mast on my GP14 has a similar looking plate for the mast step. Check out these items at APS: http://www.apsltd.com/c-957-supersparsmastboomspreader.aspx, the SPS1018 mast step with track, and the matching SPS1040 tenon heel plug. Looks to me like your boat is missing the tenon heel plug. But these things are usually riveted in place, and I suppose there are no holes in the base of the mast to indicate there was once a heel plug. I think Joe is right, give Rudy at call at D&R and see what he remembers... Of course, my example is from a totally different spar manufacturer, and it's for a small racing dinghy, but still...

The bolts are there to adjust the rake of the mast other than that the mast just sits between the angle pieces. If you move the bolts forward or aft you can change the angle of the mast for different sailing conditions. More of a racing thing and I am not a racer myself.
