My steel keel requires a minor touch up every couple of years. With the boat in its cradle how in the hell can I get under the bottom of the keel and refinish it? Thanks

pre splash

Paul Many people arrange with their yard to do that kind of work when the boat is in the slings just before it gets splashed. Unclear on the extent of the work required, but does work for just globbing a bit of paint on the bottom. Stu

sandblast

Just run into a sandbar once a month, that'll keep the bottom of the keel clean!;D

Ask your yard manager if he will let your boat sit in the slings of the travelift the evening before the day of launch. Some yards will do this, some won't. But if you can, it will give you adequate time to grind/sand and coat the bottom with whatever you prefer.

Don't worry

You have diligently cared for the other 99% of the underwater surface, and no one has ever registered a complaint because the bottom of the keel wasn't treated. Since it's lead, it won't get any fiberglass blisters. Trust me, as I'm in the process of stripping all paint, relaying barrier coat and two coats of ablative. Life is too short to get under the keel.

This is also how I get the parts that are blocked by my stand. David Lady Lillie
