I owned a 1995 Hunter 29.5 for over a year and I would like to have the bottom clean, inspected and checked. I am looking for advice on the following issues: 1-When is a bottom job needed in a fiberglass bottom boat? 2-What are the best materials to use? 3-What is a fair price to pay for this type of work on a 29.5 Hunter? 4-What would be an average amount of time between paint jobs? Thank you in advance for your help

bottom job

I own a 94 29.5. I originally used regular bottom paint but found the coats were building up and flaking. I wish I had used ablative paint. It wears off every one to two years. I use the ablative paint now and get two years with it. If you have a good afternoon. Mask the lines, put down a drape and paint the bottom yourself. Make sure you do not paint over the transducer or block any intakes. It will only take 3-4 hours total. The yard will charge plenty. A bottom paint job is usually charged by the foot or hours. save a bundle do it yourself. Use ablative paint. Works great, wears off. If you want to take all the paint off your bottom to "start again" that is really expensive around 1000 to sand blast. It you do that though I would use a barrier coat system(four to six coats ) before applying the paint. That is really expensive if the yard does it. I did the whole thing myself 3 years ago, took days.Would not have removed all the bottom paint again.Too much work. That I would have the yard do. good luck great boat.
