Can anyone tell me where I can get the bottom painted on my Hunter 23 around Tampa Bay. The boat is in a wet slip marina in Tampa. I don't have a trailer. I would appreciate anyone's response.

Local boat yard

Symmes, Check out a few local boat yards. They are eqipped with travel lifts that will haul the boat out of the water and put it on stands so it can be worked on. If you can locate a yard that allows do it yourself then you can save a little money, it is a lot of dirty nasty work and will require special apparel and mask or repirator due to the toxic nature of the bottom paint. Most all yards do bottom painting and will quote you a price to do it for you. Just check out the local marine boat yards and make a decision that works for you. Things to consider: 1. There is a charge for hauling the boat out and blocking it up. 2. Charge for pressure washing the bottom. 3. Most yard will require you buy paint and materials from them. Gallon of Petite Trinadad bottom paint $175.00 +/-. 4. Your time and cost of special clothing you should wear to protect against toxic poisening to sand/prep/paint bottom. You need a good orbital sander that sucks the dust into cannister vac. 5. The yard will then charge you for the daily yard space rent and slash your boat back into the water. My advise, find a yard that will do the job at a fair price. Good luck.

sandbar

seriously, find a nice bank (hard sand) and beach her. Paint one side per tidal cycle, I attached a small anchor and line to a halyard and used it force the boat to heel whichever way I needed so it would fall over on the correct side. At dead low dig some sand away from the keel to paint the tip (not too much or it will re-bury itself!) I used muratic acid, scrubby pads, and a scraper along with my onboard water supply to clean the bottom. Try to situate yourself so the sun will dry the bottom faster. Piece-o-cake and free!

Your Kidding, Right?

doboy, I hope your kidding. All that toxic stuff going into the water? Try that around here and if the EPA didn't get you, the locals would.

he's the problem

Do you also just dump your used oil down the storm drains too? I hope your children enjoy the planet you're leaving them with. Sailors should set the responsibility bar up above the rest of the boating world, scraping and sanding your anti-foulng paint directly into your bay is a giant step backards. Sorry, don't mean to get up on my soap box but when it comes to what is left of our beautiful waters I can't help it.
