Who has gotten a bottom job on their Catalina 30? Where and how much? Did you do work yourself or have yard do it?

I just got an outrageous estimate that was in 5 k range for the yard doing work taking bottom all the way down before two coats of non ablative paint.

Depends on what u want done. On ours we paid for the haul, the price of the haul includes a cleaning for environmental reasons. I did a better cleaning myself with a stiff brush on my drill and then applied 2+ coats of ablative myself. Cost total was under $1k. I did the work with a mask gloves and poopy suit.

Now if you want stripped, barrier coat, blister repair the price goes up.

Why all the way down? Do you have blisters? You said 2 coats of ablative......no barrier coat? If you don't have a blister problem and the existing paint is ablative then why not just 2 coats over top?

Well, that would probably be best with a media blasting, barrier coat and repaint. Pricey. You could ask around, call some other yards. At that price it may be worth traveling a day or two north or south if you can find a deal.

Preparing and painting your boats bottom is always a part of the tradition of boat ownership unless you cannot do the job yourself. Their are several do-it-yourself yards in St. Augustine to do the work. Several yards require that you MUST purchase paint and supplies at their Store, while at other yards its okay to bring your own. First thing to do if you wish to do it yourself is check that policy at each yard. You can save a bundle if you buy your own stuff (look for closeouts to get good deals on bottom paint). You use cheap brushes, rollers, latex disposable gloves and if you can stand the heat, tyvek or overalls to keep the paint off of you. Its a messy job!! But the results are awarding.

As for how to? Their are a hundred articles, videos, etc, on how to paint a bottom. Its very simple and very easy. That 5K price is ridiculous!!!!!!!
Figure with a lift in and out, hull blocking, power wash the hull and your labor (scrap off the bottom growth), stripe the water line and paint, you can do it under 1K (providing your blister free, no change out of the cutlass bearing, thru hulls are okay, rudder is fine and prop/shaft are okay). Do not forget to change the zinc!

Do it yourself! You will know your boat better, save a bundle of $$$$$$ and take the pride in what you have done. Besides, get the family involved as well..............not quite like washing Fido in the pool, but nothing beats hanging out in a boat yard :)

If you want to travel a ways and head through downtown Jacksonville and down the St. John's, check out the Green Cove Springs yard for do-it yourself.

Good luck

Btw, there are ablative paints that are fine painting over hard bottom paints. I really like to know their reason to sand all the way down if there are no blisters.

I just paid a little over $1200 for the haulout...5 days on the hard and the painting itself. I took care of the few blisters and fairing work on the keel myself. but thats in California.
