Bottom Job Question. . .

I have removed the old bottom paint on our 12 year old Legend 37.5 with the idea of sealing the bottom. We don't have any blisters,this will be a preventative measure (like I don't have enough to do. should I use the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy?) I read in Don Casey's book "This Old Boat" that using a urathane/silicone/aklyd based enamel is preferable to using a 2 partepoxy, for various reasons. Someone else has told me that after continuous imersion, there is the possibility that the enamel paint may blister.Has anyone tried this? or know someone who tried this? I would like to haul every 2.5 to 3 years after this to repaint (bottom paint, notthe whole process).Chriss/v Tidesong

NOTHING sticks like epoxy

That is why there are epoxy based glues and primers that seal off rust etc that are epoxy based.I would go with two-part epoxy.ThanksJim W

If the bottom is stripped of paint and no moisture is detected in the glass (suggest using a Skipper meter) you might want to barrier coat now with epoxy then paint.

Chris:I hope that you mis-understood what Don was talking about. I doubt that you are going to get ANY barrier coating with any type of urathane/silicone/aklyd based enamel.I suggest that you go to the Interlux Paint site and follow their directions for a barrier coat. Then choose the bottom paint that best suits you area. Not all bottom paints work well in all places.Remember, most bottom paint do nothing to prevent blisters. It is only to help prevent growth and makes cleaning the bottom easier.

Chris, If your boat is twelve years old with no blisters, I wouldn't mess with it. Application of a barrier coat is an added expense that isn't necessary, especially if there is not a blister problem in progress. Just my 2 cents---David"South Wind"1988 h33.5
