Preparing the iron keel for bottom paint
We have a 1986 model with the wing keel. We made the error of leaving it in the salt water for four years before hauling to refinishe the bottom. what a mess. We probably should have had it sand blasted. However we used a heavy grit on a grinder and reached down to the bare metal. We used interlux 2000 as a base coat and faired the keel with 3M fairing compound. We used an ablative finish on the bottom and keel. We haul the boat in the spring and wash the bottom down with a sprayer, before we return north for the summer.
