Bottom Cleaning

I pull my boat(Catalina 27)every other April for bottom cleaning and new bottom paint. I use a multi-season anti-fouling (vs. Albative (sp?)). This is the off year. Now for my question. A friend of mine suggested having the boat pulled just for an "in the sling" power wash to the bottom. I'm sure this would take care of the slime buildup, but would the paint survive all that pressure? The cost would be between $150 - $200.It it worth it, or would I be wasting my money? The boat is moored in brackish water. Usually, after two seasons, the bottom looks pretty good with just a few barnicles. Thanks for your thoughts.

Harry Why not have a diver clean the bottom. We have ours done quarterly, and it only costs about $55 a dive. For the same amount of $ you could keep the bottom cleaner over a longer period of time. Stu

I would also suggest a diver.

Harry: I would also recommend a diver. They normally charge about $1.25-2.00/ft depending on your location. Another option to keep the bottom clean in between hauling and/or diver cleaning is a device called a 'Dri-Diver'. It is a large scrubbie pad on a handle that allow you to scrub you bottom and keel. We have used one of these for many years. It does a good job of keeping most of the slime off the bottom. It is not a substuitue for either the haul or the diver but does an adequate job of sprucing up the bottom.

Three for the diver...

They're a bit more expensive up here, probably b/c there's less demand for them so there are fewer of them, but I'd say its the way to go. Pressure washing is likely to take off a fair bit of paint unless it was applied perfectly. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

for a diver. Even if ablative paint is applied perfectly a power wash will take it off.
