We are considering an older H30, A 70's model. Is there any differences in hull glass that would make any particular model either a ruled out or a defenite consideration. What should I watch for and what should I watch out for, other than blisters?

DON'T KNOW ABOUT '70s

I have an '81 H30, first time I hauled it took me a week to work on the 500 or so nickle sized blisters, 50 silver dollar and 10 to 15 softball sized blisters I found. I gaffed off the pinholes literaly thousands of those. The yard guys wanted me to strip the gel coat and apply epoxy. If I were you I would haul it and have a survayer you trust tell you what you will be looking at cost and time wise. Ps, it was kinda fun working on the boat so if your a trooper jump in and wear a mask.

Balsa Core

I bought 74 H25 as a project boat two years ago. The biggest problem I had was rotten balsa coring in substantial protions of the deck. The worst area was around the mast step. The cost of a 30' boat, even an older model, is sufficient to justify a survey. This should identify any major problems with the boat.

Blistering

I believe that in the earlier 70 models they were still using epoxy resin which would eliminate or atleast minimize the blistering problems. They built hulls good back then. I had a 27 hunter (early 70's) never a blister. If the balsa core is involved, well Good Luck! Dry it well!

mast step

Check the mast step compression post at the bilge of the boat see that the steel support in the bilge has not rotted and caused the mast step to sink into the deck. Some of the older 30s did have that problem. Not too big of a deal providing you can take the mast down jack up the compression post and replace the "I" beam that lays in the bilge.
