Hello, Today I went for my first trip in a bosun's chair. We had a lot of problems with the line of the winch. I tried to use the main halyard winch in the mast. The problem was we kept getting over-rides on the line. Any hints to prevent that from happening? Thanks, Barry

Bloody hell

Make sure you have a second line ie second main halyard or the headsail halyard with you as well.

Find a talented 10-year-old instead

One who's good with tools and takes direction. Eight-year-old would be even better, except that the priests have already taken them.

We are having the same problem. Our starboard sheet winch has suddenly becoem prone to overrides! No problem on the port winch, or any other winches. Both sheet winches were recently maintained. David Lady Lillie Lady Lillie

Bosun's Chair

Use a person to "tail" the sheet around the winch. Don't use the self tailer since you must maintain control of the sheet at all times. Use an extra wrap instead of the tailer and keep tension on the line at all times while someone else cranks the winch. This person is to handle the tail of the line and ensure that it doesn't slip backwards and that it doesn't override any other wraps. But the weight of the person in the chair will also make a difference. For safety's sake, be sure to have a backup sheet TIED to the chair, also (or the person being raised). NEVER depend on the halyard shackle to hold the chair. Good Luck.

Bill and the priest

Bill, whats up with the priest comments? Maybe you thought it was a good line but please think about where you are before posting such comments. It offended me as well I'm sure others. Was it realy needed? If you have some sort of problem with a priest may I suggest that you get some professional help and not make us all suffer the sins of one person and get your self at peace with what is the real problem! This is a sailing/boating forum let try to stay with in the boundries please !

and most importantly ...

on this "sailors" forum, let's not let anything possibly offensive pass by without an extensive post that even further highlights the issue....and put it in the header while you're at it. Smart thinking.

Back to winching.

I have seen that override problem. I like to use two snatch blocks on the toerail or wherever to take the line back to a bigger winch. With the snatch blocks(two for safety) you should be able to get an angle that will prevent overrides. The grinder grinds and a second person tails. Person tailing should prevent the overrides. I am working on using two climbing ascenders to go up the mast without a grinder. One on the chair and one on stirrups.

I'm so sick and tired of people who are politicaly correct. A little humor is not out of place. I remember the first time my father hoisted me up in a boson’s chair - I was about 12 years old. Cool view. What really s**ked was when I had to clean up a ketchup bottle that broke in heavy seas - wouldn't have ketchup on my hamburgers for a month after that. Never got sea sick, but down below in heavy sea and an overwhelming smell of tomatoes was enough for awhile.

Bill, keep the humor coming, loved it.

As a child I was force fed that stuff by 'those' people. Always thought something was wrong with them. I sure wasn't offended.
