To all of our Boston Harbor sailors... I recently bought a really nice WAAS Raymarine GPS Receiver/Chartplotter. It works fantastically most of the time, but it loses it's signal when I sail within a 1/2 mile radius of Logan Airport. Has anyone else experienced this? Boston Harbor is a major port, so I was surprised to see that GPS coverage wasn't available in much of the inner harbor. Could it be that my GPS receiver is malfunctioning? It works 100% of the time everywhere else, so I know it's not the wiring. Please let me know if you've had a similar experience. Thanks, Allen Schweitzer s/v Falstaff C-30 Hull# 632

Did you ever install the Garhouer rigid boom vang. If you did, it's absolutely amazing isn't it? I finally have control of the main. Not to change the subject. but we had discussed this earlier.~~~_/)~~~ Sean There is no link!

We also lose coverage around Logan, it must be some security thing, but it shouldn't be a big deal, just stay in the main channel heading into or out of Boston

Not a "Security Thing"

It's just that some aviation navigation systems at airports interfere with the GPS civil code signal, causing loss-of-lock. It doesn't take very much for this to happen, either. The GPS signal you pull in is very much below normal ambient RF noise levels. Any additional "noise" from interfering sources will just overpower the receiver's ability to detect the signal codes & process GPS solutions. --RonD

Allan, Have the same problem with my 4 year old Garmin. Usually go into Boston for an overnight once or twice a year and its pretty consistent. Bryce S/V Spellbinder H-410

That's hwat you would think

Jim, It would seem simple to "just stay in the main channel heading into or out of Boston" but I heard a rumor that Allen actually ran aground last year heading back in. I am sure it is not true, but that might be why he is now so concerned about losing his signal. Mike
