Use the newest halyard you have and the 2nd best for a safety line. Can't be too safe at ~48' above the water on a stick!!:D

Pelican had two old halyards when I bought her. Replaced both then bought an ATN Mastclimber. Simple and safe way to get to the top... Actually kind of fun. Easy to do solo.

We use the main halyard to get to the top and the jib as a backup. Since ours is a fractional rig the jib has to be slacked off the last few feet to the top.

at my age i am thinking mast steps ..i know they are expensive but at 69 yo a safety line is a lot more appealing to me so really they are cheap compared to the alternative
