I am bareboating in Croatia (Dubrovnik to Split) the last week in May. I am a little concerned about these Bora winds, which are mostly during the winter. Does anybody have experience there, and can I ASSUME the VHF marine weather can predict when they may be occuring?? Thanks, Bob

Last Year in Croatia

We did a bareboat May 27 - June 3, 2006 from Dubrovnik to Split. It was the best sailing and the best vacation we have ever had. The winds were great, the people wonderful, the facilities phenomenal, and the sites unspoiled. You will love the trip. I skippered with 3 couples on board a Beneteau 51.1.

Weather via Cell Phone

It's a small world! As I'm reading your post about how to get weather information in Croatia I'm listening to Radio Stiermark in Austria via the computer. http://steiermark.orf.at/magazin/studio/radio/popup?skin=liveradio A work-around to the VHF may be to use your cell phone and call, say, to call your rental office via cell phone and get a weather report from them. An inexpensive way to do this is by buying a prepaid SIM card and changing it out in your phone. Enter "SIM card" in your search engine. We use T-mobile because they have excellent coverage in the EU (don't know about Croatia). I buy a SIM card and in a couple minutes I have my old one out and the new one in and I can make calls just as at home in the USA. It shouldn't take that long to get a weather report via phone so for the duration of your trip the cost should be inconsequential. If going the cell phone/call office route, it would be also good to check for cell phone coverage. Ask the charter company what they know about the area you'll be cruising (for the phone company you'll be using) or check the Internet if there is a map available (for the phone company you'll be using).

I spend two weeks every year in Croatia

in Korcula, where my mom has a home. The avatar is the view from our terrace at sunset. The Bora (Bura) is rare when you will be going, but it can happen. They can be so fierce that dolphins drown in the blown spray. The surface of the water turns white. Your prevailing wind conditions will be calm in the morning, rising to 15+ kts from 11:00 AM onwards onshore. Around 4-5:00PM the wind will drop gradually and you can expect calms after sunset. It makes for lazy starts after a pleasant evening, with good sailing for 5-6 hours to get to your next port of call. Look through Ersin's link below, very good info.

I can put my two cents worth on the bora wind . After spending 9 weeks training with the Greek and American SEAL teams we headed to Revina on the east coast of Italy. We were a 200 ton navy patrol gunboat . The captain informed me that we were in for some smokey weather , and that I was to turn in for some rest. Within hours we were in 10/15 foot seas Four of us maned the boat ,all others turned in and strapped in . I was at the helm for 18 hours . Seas were 20/25 feet and not a cloud in the sky ! I will never forget the bora winds !
