Boot stripe change

I'd like to change the original gelcoat baby blue stripe on the sheer and the waterline of my hull, but was quoted big bucks to have a yard spray them a darker blue. Has anyone tried using vinyl pinstripe tape for this application? Would be a LOT cheaper. Did this work out ok or not? Thanks in advance, Trevor

bottom paint

Trevor, I got disgusted with the algae build up on my waterline. I bought the Micron Extra in blue and red, mixed them and matched my topsides stripe. It worked great and was a very reasonable cost. r.w.landau

Boot Stripe

Trevor, I had the same color stripe. It was awful. I lightly sanded it and used just one coat of Petitte Easy Poxy. It is still glossy after five years. I also changed the stripe by the rub rail. I used 1 inch wide vinyl tape in a matching coler. It has also held up for five years. It really changed the look of the boat. The deck was also light blue. I changed it to Seattle Grey with Easy Poxy. I have been more than satisfied with the results of these changes. Hope this helps. Sean S/V Carnaby Street

Sean...

Thanks for the tip. Did you just brush on the Petit Easy Poxy after a light sanding? How did you color match the upper stripe? I'm thinking about using vinyl tape for the bootstripe to match the stripe by the rub rail but may go the paint route with Petit if it's difficult to line up correctly. Thanks for your insight, Trevor trevor@sailboatowners.com

Masking Tape Choice

If you decide to paint the bootstripe, make sure you use "fine line" masking tape. It makes for neater edge and the paint does not leak under the masking tape. I repainted the bootstripe and waterline stripe on a previous boat ant the results were great. Wayne, s/v Wind Drift

Boot Stripe

Trevor, Actually I got the vinyl tape from "PRIZM" on Lake Union. Also got some great graphics for my boat name. Not really that expensive. Anyway, the tape was just a little bit darker green than the paint, so I added some black polyurethane paint to the Easy Poxy and it came out perfectly. What's your boat name? Maybe I will see you in the islands. Sean S/V Carnaby Street

Done Just That

Bought a 250' roll of 4" vinyl stripe (hunter green) from a local power boat detailing shop that was clearing out old stock. I have 3 stripes along the hull. One 4" below the rubrail, then a 1" contrasting stripe 3" below that, and another 4" stripe about 2" above the water line. I think this really shows off the hull, and I have had many compliments. The vinyl cleans up easily, and I touch up minor nicks in the vinyl with a matching topside paint. Don

Thanks Sean

I just ordered the graphics for the new name ("Dunoon") and the 1" vinyl tape from Prism Graphics.... these have have done great work for me in the past. This morning I measured the bootstripe but found it varies in thickness at the stern and bow. I'm having the boat hauled this Friday, so hopefully will be able to get some paint for the bootstripe to match the stripe in time... thanks for your tips! Trevor S/V Dunoon

Easypoxy

Hi Trevor, I used Easypoxy on my boat. I had baby blue decks with dark blue sheer & boot stripes. Changed to Seattle Gray nonskid & black stripes. I really dig it & it wasn't too hard. Mix a little Penetrol in the paint so you have a little more time in brushing it on (I used a foam brush). Don't put too much in or it'll take forever to dry! The hardest part is getting the fine line tape on juuuuuuust right. Being the perfectionist I am, I spent way too much time doing this. But it looks good! LaDonna

Boot Stripe

Trevor, there's one more thing. While the boat is out of the water, you may want to check where the normal "grunge" line is. Mine was up on to the boot stripe, so I changed it just a bit so my 1 inch vinyl stripe was totally out of the water when the boat was in the slip. It probably sits about 1 inch from the water. I used a white vinyl, and keeping it out of the water keeps it clean and white. I painted up to the new waterline then installed the white stripe. Sean S/V Carnaby Street
