I am considering installing a Boomkicker to permit removal of the topping lift. Interested in any info from folks who may have done this already. Concerned about how one attaches the mast mount end of the assembly. I have only a very small gate in the mast below the boom. Certainly don't want to have to pull either the mawt or boom to install this device. Any information, tips etc greatly appreciated. Thanks Grant Ziebell SV NEMO Pensacola, FL

Use a Garhauer rigid vang

Grant: If you really want to remove the topping lift, check out the Garhauer vang. Best buy and warranty.

Installing Rigid Vangs or Boomkickers

Rigid vangs are two separate devices... a rope vang and a spring of some sort. Boomkicker seems cheap because it's really just the spring part, they assume you already have a rope vang. The installation hassle for a boomkicker is the same as for a rigid vang. You have to install a bracket on the mast and another on the boom. Installation involves drilling holes in your spars, and tapping them for screws, which hold the brackets in place. It's easier than it sounds, but you'll have to do some homework on using taps. It isn't necessary to remove either spar to do the installation. I don't have a boomkicker, I have the Garhauer rigid vang. It's an excellent and beautiful piece of hardware. I'll bet it's cheaper than the boomkicker, and not one bit harder to install.

Garhauer install problem

Installed a Garhauer in January. Last night the attaching point on the boom let go. The bolt holding the boom-vang on the boom appearently shook loose and fell out. I will be replacing it with a bolt and lock nuts and maybe lock-tight. Other than this problem (vang dropped down under sail with no damage) I endorse the Garhauer product.

Garhauer Rigid Vang Model

Thanks for info on Boomkicker and Garhauer rigid vang. Will definitely consider Garhauer vang. Do you happen to recall the Garhauer model number? Thanks Grant Ziebell
