My boat came with LazyJacks and I'm pretty sure I would like to remove them. Full batten main hangs up when raising.

The question is this: My boom will rotate to match the mainsail (the gooseneck allows this) angle. Does the BoomKicker boom mount allow for some rotation? If not, will the fact that the boom can rotate damage the BoomKicker?

Would like to get rid of both the LazyJacks and the topping lift.

I can understand the lazy jacks as most people won't need them to handle a sail with the size and weight as used by a Starwind 223. LazyJacks can be a pain and would not have them on a boat unless necessary. We trailer a 1985 Starwind 223 to distant locations maybe twice a year for 7-10 day trips. It is a sturdy, comfortable pocket cruiser. Regarding the topping lift, never gave it much consideration. Our boat does not have a traveller nor boom-vang but sails efficiently enough for our needs. We do have a large bimini and a portble A/C.

Boomkicker has a mount near the base of the mast. Mine goes in the track and swivels along with the boom.

Thanks for the responses, folks. Appreciate the photo of the lower mount too. I did find that.

It's the boom mount I'm curious about. Since my boom does rotate through about 60 degrees I don't know if the BoomKicker boom side mount will be destroyed by the rotation of the boom. Would hate to have it all installed and then see the thing mangled.

Will try to phone the manufacterer and see what's up. Posted this on Sunday and figured they were closed.

Somewhat shocked to have stumped the mighty SO.com information cache. ;-)

Had our first sail with our new (to us) 86 223 on Saturday. Very happy with the results. Solid boat on all points of sail. My wife had never been sailing before and she seemed quite comfortable at the end of the day.

We don't have a traveller as well but do have the boom vang. We have the bimini but no A/C. Though I can see my wife saying something about that....

Hoping to trailer her up to the Apostle Islands later in the season and will probably make a trip to Lake Michigan as well. For now though Lake Pepin is a great place to learn the boat.

gooseneck

I'm pretty sure you're going to have issues trying to fit a Boomkicker on a semi- rotating boom. More than likely you're going to twist up the Boomkicker mounting bracket that attaches to the boom. Should be a fairly easy fix to replace the gooseneck with a non rotating style. You may also be able to pin the existing one so it will function normally but not rotate.
Schaeffer, Racelite or Dwyer should be able to provide a new gooseneck if required.

I am trying to understand why the boom would need to rotate. Anybody want to educate me ?

Thanks Alex...I was beginning to think along these lines as well.

Todd, I don't know necessarily that the boom has to rotate...it just does. This is a new boat to us and we're learning the ins and outs. Was kinda surprised to see that it did rotate with the sail..but it did provide for a very clean line from boom to sail.

I'm pretty sure it's not a roller furling boom as it is not round at all. Looks like all the other non furling booms I've been associated with over the years.

My wife says I like sailing cause there's always something to putter with.....

I get a little twist in my boom too, but since I have a loose footed main i just ignore it. The boomkicker doesn't seem to mind. I think you'll find that Don Gillette would suggest that the boom should not twist as that can alter the shape of the sail. I'd be looking for missing parts too.

I've also seen pictures where someone made a set of brackets to keep his boom from twisting when he used the boomkicker, though I can't remember where I saw them.

Quick update: Got a very prompt email back from the SO.com store. There is an anti-roll part for $44.00 that they can send with the order. Don't know how it's attached or how it works but apparently they've had this issue before.

The gooseneck on my boom feels spring loaded and does allow free rotation around the axis. Don't think anything's missing but what do I know.

If I go the BoomKicker route I'll post how it goes.
