Sounds like something to slow the boom from moving too quickly from one side to the other.
But our boats are small, and if we're vigilant, we might haul in the mainsheet some before gybing. You can also man-handle some of the energy produced.

when running downwind I attach my boomvang to a chainplate to prevent accidental jibe ,works good for me
Good advice. Especially for new sailors, short-handed crews and inexperienced crews who may not recognize an impending crash gybe, or be able to react to a downwind spin-out. I use and recommend the Wichard GybEasy. Yes it is expensive, but so is your rig. It is foolproof, no moving parts, it works, and is easy to rig and use: Sold right here at Sailboatowners.com:

A low cost and easy approach:
I use a preventer that I made out of a length of line and a couple of snap hooks (SS but not shackles). One hook is tied about 1/3 of the way, the other is kept on by a loop on the long end. While running, I clip it to the bale and forward to the toe rail. I send the line thru the loop than tie a single knot, sending a loop through instead of the bitter end. I can install in seconds without going forward or removing my boom vang, In an emergency, a quick yank and she's free. Now, this probably wouldn't work fro one of the big girls, but us trailer sailors will do just fine with this sort of Yankee-ness.

I think us smaller boat guys couple save a bunch of green over the Wichard device and use a heavy duty "rescue figure 8" (with horns) and a soft shackle. I've seen this posted on the forums sometime back. Maybe by Joe on "Trinkka", he's got a ton of great mods.

I'd check it if it gets a bad shock load (bad gybe) but they are very strong.

Yes, a climber's figure 8 is the grandaddy of the Wichard device. It won't prevent a boom from swinging across, it will brake the motion. For small boats it might be the perfect solution for hands free boom control. It doesn't have the strength and extra friction of the wichard.
