Don't use mine

I have one installed on my boat but never use it. I guess I don't know when and how to use it. It seems to work fine without it.

Dang Vang

Dave, I have one on my 26, and it comes in handy when needed. When running downwind, I unclip the snap shackle at the base of the mast and attach it to the base of the forward stanchion. This does double duty as a 1) preventer, and 2) keeps the boom from lifting up to much. It's not a necessary piece of equipment, but one of many that helps. Sail Twist

Dave I refer you to "Sail Trim", forum here at this site. Go to Don Guillettes' posting of sail twist. This will give you the main reason this control is important. When maximum power is wanted hauling down hard on the vang can be used, conversely it can be used to de-accelerate the sail. Ben's use as a preventer is a bonus for sure. Installing one is fairly straightforward. You can purchase one already to go, or make one up yourself from standard parts. The attachment points should already be available on the mast and boom, as I believe it was a standard feature on our boats. There are lots of diagrams available in sailing instructional books, and probably on the web also. I can take a picture of my setup if you wish and post it. I'd recommend installing one as it gives a further measure of sail control. Don

Vang

Dave - Whenever Don beats me to a post it seems like I'm redundant. :) I do use my vang for twist control, but I tend to use it more as a handy preventer. I'm actually going to add another this winter so I can clip them out to both sides and run the lines aft for good control when jibing. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

boom vang

I have to put in my two cents worth on this one... On many boats without a vang, the boom will raise high enough to get caught in the back stay in the event of and accidental jibe. You can guess that in such case you might be in condiderable difficulty. Also, the vang and top lift are a good sailtrim combination for best performance especially in light air.
