I've had my 1987 Hunter 23 for a year and a half now and just purchased a Boom vang and a Boom kicker. This boat never had a boom vang before so could someone let me know what is the best way to mount the vang to the mast & boom and at what angle. The boom kicker came with hardware and directions. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Wally-

H23 Boom Vang

Hi Wally - I implemented the same set up at the start of last season. The kicker was the easy part - I just followed the instructions and ended up using the heavier of the rod sets. I positioned it so that it gives a slight upward lift to the boom when there is zero tension on the vang. The vang attachment on the boom was simple - I just used the forward of 2 bails already in place. My first attempt at the mast attachment involved sliding a bolt down the channel in the mast and then attaching the vang to the bolt with some combination of shackles and other hardware. This setup failed because any bolt/pin I had that would fit the channel was either not long enough or stout enough to stand up to the force applied by the vang. My solution was to wrap a nylon strap with a buckle around the base of the mast and attach the vang to it. This actually works ok, but definitely looks sloppy. I suppose the right solution is to attach a bail to the base of the mast, but I was in a hurry and too uncertain about the right way to go about it. Definitely want a better solution before we splash this Spring.

Bail on mast is the way to go

Dpn't skimp on it either. The load from the vang can be high, and if you have a cunningham, that will add even more load. Peter H23 "Raven"

mast base shackle

I have the same boat and setup..........I love it by the way. I ended up putting a shackle at the mast base. The pin becomes the mast base pin and the shackle "loop" is where I attach the vang. Works for me!
