A boom vang is quite simple. Just look at other set ups an order from garhaurer. They usually supply Catalina with their hardware. They are really easy to work with.....My hard vang on my 380 was installed substandard by some dealer and even though I am the second owner, Garhaurer replaced it FREE! (they even paid the shipping). You can never find that anywhere...Their products are quality too.

Boom Vang Replacement

Check out other C-27's for ideas. West marine has good, econonmical vangs (with out paying high aftermarket OEM prices) already madeup for small to large boats. My '85 std rig has two double sheeve blocks with 5/8" quality sheet line.

Garhauer

No question in my mind, go Garhauer. A rigid vang from them for your 27 will be about $175 + tax, shipping, etc. This is only about $50-$60 more than West Marine's "soft" vang.

Soft vs. Hard Vang Hmmmm......

A "soft vang" with a releasable shackle at the mast base will allow you to easily snap it on the rail for a gybe-less main boom yielding safe and controlled running- something a rigid vang lacks.

Full Time Preventers

In the Calif Delta where we do most of our sailing, almost 50% is downwind. Therefore my boat has permanent preventers rigged with 2:1 purchase starting from a blockw/becket at each rail to a block on the boom, back to the rail and to a cam cleat on the outside of the cockpit coaming. In combination with a rigid vang you have the best of both worlds.
