BoomVang

I assume that you do not have one now so I would recommend going with the Garhauer rigid boom vang which would not be that much more than a traditional rope one. They are asking $190.00 for the rigid one designed to use on a 28.5. They have the traditional vangs which are around $100 for your boat. Very nice equipment and they are now pretty much standard equipment on Catalinas. By the way the rigid vang eliminates the need for a topping lift since it holds the boom up when the sail is not raised. Go to www.garhauer.com for an online catlogue. Good luck

I agree...go with a Garhauer

I've had one on my last two boats and would'nt do without one. Great piece of gear!!

Definatly go with a solid vang. Add asecond block to double your purchase.

Help me understand . . .

Please describe the benefits of conversion to a rigid vang. I'm pretty thick and don't fully understand. Thanks!

Rigid Vang Pluses

Rigid vangs help in many ways. Since they are spring loaded they support the boom and eliminate the need for a topping lift. Also, they help stabilize the boom when you're running in light air with choppy swell. No more thumping the boom around. They also have all of the sail shaping advantages of a regular vang like flattening out the main. The Garhauer vang seems to be a favorite around here. I really enjoy mine and the price is reasonable...
