I think my boat (hunter 25) would be much improved by the addition of a boom vang. My questions are: Is this true? what type (rigid vs not)? and finanally what are the differences besides price and appearance? Thanks

Gerhauer

Hi Thomas, I exchanged the stock vang on my h240 with the Gerhauer RV12-1 rigid vang (relatively cheap compared to others in the market) and killed 2 birds: got rid of the cheapy stock vang with its wimpy cleat and also got rid of the stock (and dangerous) topping lift. I did have to add a custom homemade angled spacer to the cleat mount of the vang to direct the line back to the cockpit at a proper angle so I could uncleat/adjust/cleat from the cockpit. http://www.gerhauermarine.com Check it out and good luck. brian

boom boom

One of the uses of a vang is to flatten the main in heavier air, taking some curl or "belly" out of the sail, thus decreasing heel. A rigid vang can also double as a topping lift by holding the boom up when the main is down. The rigid vangs are more expensive but probably worth it. Ready-to-use line vang kits are available from West, BoatUS, etc.

Cam Cleats?

Is the Garhauer rigid vang self cleating, say with a cam cleat or do you have to mount a cleat aft?

H25 Boom Vang

I have a 77 H 25 and recently had a new boom made up and purchased a new vang. I purchased a non-rigid medium sized vang through Port Supply (also can be purchased through West Marine - see westmarine.com). It seems to work well on San Francisco Bay. It was about $120. You might want to consider that option.

BoomKicker

I put the BoomKicker on my H26 and think it's one of the best additions I've done. Not so much for an improvement in the sailinghandling - I probably wouldn't notice that. But for the convenience of dropping the main sail.
