Basically the vang prevents the boom from lifting and allows for proper 'shape' of the leech portion of the sail. Properly setting/adjusting a vang (as well as 99% of all other sail 'adjustments') properly requires the usage of tell-tales - small streamers of lightweight nylon material attached to the sail's luff, midcord, and leech.

A very simple and elegant methodology for sail trim and sail shape using *tell tales*, etc. can be found here in the SBO website: http://shop.sailboatowners.com/books/category-books.htm?fno=400&cat=1304

You're welcome. My friend made those videos and published them to help out sailors with questions about those pieces of gear. He's making and adding more videos on a fairly regular basis... :)

I've contacted my friend and asked him to contact you. I sent him your message verbatim. :) Be aware that English is not his native language, though he is fairly fluent in it. :)

SD, thanks a bunch for posting that link. Probably the most lucid and demonstrative video/discussion of sail controls as I've seen. Would your friend mind if I used it/them in a club "show & tell"?
