Hunter 26 trailer
Hi all, I am trying to find a Boom Vang System for a 1994 Hunter 26. The owner's manual gives it a reference number of HW0278, but google doesn't turn up anything on that.

I purchased the boat for a good price, but I am now finding some things missing, and I am very new to this. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank You,

John

Hunter frequently puts their (stock) number on parts that are frequently standard products from other companies. The key components for you are the mast and boom attachments. If you have them, it is a simple matter of choosing any one of several brands of soft vangs. Check out the Garhauer or Harkens; I personally think the Garhauers are the best bang for your buck. Call them and they'll advise on the proper size for you. If you don't have the attachments, you may want to consider a rigid vang from Garhauer. Might be a bit more of a hassle for trailering but is a really nice product and gives sweet control of the main and minimizes use of a topping lift.

Thanks for the info, I have been looking at the Harken web page today.
There is no connection for a rigid vang on the mast, so I am assuming it should have a soft vang. In the mast raising instructions, in the manual, it mentions "remove the stainless steel mast step pin from the mast step casting being careful not to lose the boom vang strap."

I do not have this part, and I have no idea what it should look like. There is no drawing or part #.

Hmmm. I'd contact Hunter and tell them you are missing this 'strap' and would like a replacement or a detailed description so one can be fabricated. I do not own a 26 so my direct knowledge is limited but I suspect any SS tang ~1/16 - 1/8" thick and of the proper length would work with a bit of effort.

I have a 95 h26, and here is a picture of the mast base. Forward is to the right. On the aft side of the base, you can see a long rod with a metal tang in the middle of it. You attach the bottom of the mast to the mast step with this rod, using it as a pivot to raise the mast. The trick is to remember to put the metal tang in before securing the rod with a ring-ding. The vang should be attached to the hole in the tang, not to the mast itselft. The other end of the vang attaches to the bottom of the boom.
Hope this helps.

These guys make a great rigid vang for the H-26. I have one on mine, led the line back to the cockpit. (I put a set of line clutches on the port side.)

When you have a rigid vang, you can get rid of the topping lift.

Thanks so much, the pic shows me the tab is missing from my boat. I can add that to the list of missing parts that I keep coming across. Each time I hunt one down, I learn a little more about it...
