I have an O'day 26 1984 that is in very good condition. there is a bail at the foot of the mast. on the underside of the boom is a bracket that I am assuming is for the boom vang to hook to. It is riveted to the boom and has a "key Hole" cut in it to recieve some sort of hanger that the vang block would attach to. any ideas? is this factory? where can I get the proper piece? thanks in advance...

The original optional Boom Vang for your 26 would have had a short length of wire attached to the upper block and on hte boom end of that cable would be a ball swedged to the cable. The ball fit into that keyhole. I have the same type attachment (just smaller) on my Day Sailer. Any good rigging shop can make up a cable for you with the block attached at one end and the ball on the other (cable will be about 12" long +/-) The lower (mast) end of the vang will be a fiddle block with a camcleat and attached to the bail with a shackle or snap-shackle. You can also get a complete boom vang from Rudy at D&R Marine.

Thanks, I figured it was stock from the way it was attached, I have talked to Rudy before and will call tomorrow. I looked high and low in the rigging shops but could not visualize what it looked like. is there vang on the web site? i could not find any info on it?

Boom Bail
I also have a 26 and for some reason unknown to me the boom that came with the boat was too short. I had a new boom manufactured by Dwyer Mast and the drawings in their archives showed a bail vice the "ball and slot" arrangement. I did go with the bail. My recommendation would be to install a bail ($25 or so) and pick up a vang with snap shackles on the blocks. I happen to be using a Ronstan vang purchased from Defender's.

Fixed the rascal
thanks for the input,, the drawing was great,, it is what one of the other guys discribed. I fixed the problem by running a long shackle threw the bracket on the boom and the boat all ready had the bail on the boom. installed blocks and lines and it is good to go.

Keep it simple
If I had not had the bracket allready installed and nothing on the mast I would simpley install a bail on the Mast and a bail with the bolt long enough to go all the way thru the boom,and snap sackle the vang to those. I have no Pics at this time but will take some this weekend if it helps.

Missing parts.
Sunbird. The diagram you posted was very interesting. I have a 1975 25' Oday. The fitting that attaches to the mast and holds the boom vang to the mast is missing. Can you get me to a diagram that will show this fitting, or a site that i might buy one?

The diagram was helpful, but it shows a eye, attached to the front of the mast with a line running threw that. Just attach a bail to the boom side of the mast and another on the boom and snap shackles on the blocks would attach to these. easy on easy off and it would not have the possibility of coming out of the keyway or bad line or knot... it was raining while I was at the boat today I will post a pic tommorrow.
