HELP... I just bought a '76 O'Day 22' boat. I can't figure out how to attach the Boom Vang. The end that attaches to the boom is easy, but there is no attachment point at the bottom of the mast or anywhere on the mast. the BV block has an extra pully that appears to be part of the attachment method. Anyone that can describe their boat would be greatly appreaciated. Rob,

The glossery says there is an eye at the base of the mast. Mine is missing. Do you know if that is an O'Day special part? Is it attached via machine screws to either side of the slot? Or is it locked into the slot somehow?

There is a fixture
...at the base of the mast, sort of a u-bolt in the mast step. The best pic I have of that is attached (see link) but it's not a very good pic - you can just make out that the vang is attached there. I coil the free end of the vang and stuff it between the vang lines when the boat is at the slip, so it's up off the deck and the rain can drain out of it. Could it be that your previous owner took the u-bolt off somehow, or replaced the mast (such that the mast foot doesn't have a u-bolt now)? The ring is part of the mast base, I believe it is a removable u-bolt. You could probably get one at West Marine or any other shop with a decent variety of stanless hardware. The vang attaches there, and to the boom about 3 ft from the forward end. The Oday fitting on the boom was a ball-shaped end on a pendant, the ball goes into a keyhole fitting on a heavy strap that is riveted to the boom. I did not "inherit" the pendant, so I installed a stainless steel eyebolt with two nuts to cinch it in place, and I use a bow shackle on that to attache the upper vang block. Hope this gets you there!

Rob, There are a couple of fittings which help out with the attachment. I have seen some typical set-ups here in the achieves but a quick search did not result in much - they are out there. mast hound
on my 22 I installed a mast hound to the base of the mast. Works great. the only downside is that it gets in the ways when you are raising or lowering the mast and therefore needs to be screwed on and not rivited on. Another option would be to bolt on a large padeye at the base.

Boom Vang Tang
Hi Rob; My 1979 22 masthead rig O'day has a vang tang bolted to the lower part of the mast, just an inch or two above the bottom plate. It's basically a loop of 1/4" stainless with eyes at each end. The distance between the eyes is the width of the mast at the mast's centerline. One end is attached to the port side of the mast with a bolt and washer (or through-bolted - I'm not sure) and the other end is the same deal, but on the starboard side of the mast. The loop portion of the tang goes aft towards the cockpit. The loop is so one can secure the block and tackle associated with a boom vang assembly, like as shown in George Chamberlain's boat. The vang swivels up and down a bit. I have the boom vang tackle attached to the loop (vang tang). The other side of the boom vang tackle is attached to the mast with a ball joint swaged end and a slotted fitting rivited to the bottom of the boom. I can get you dimensions if you'd like.
