Is it safe to attach one end a boom vang to a stanchion base?

Why

This may be dumb on my part, but why would you attach the vang to the stanchion base. It should attach to the boom and the base of the mast.

Jibe Preventer

Jerry, I sometimes run a line from the boom bail to the base of a stanchion to prevent accidental jibes. I have used the vang for the same purpose, but its usually more work.

i would rig one farther aft

We usually just rig a preventer with using extra line attached to the eye where the clew reefing point is on the boom. I think it would probably suit you better to have a preventer attached to the boom a little farther aft then the vang. Having it so far forward may exert too much pressure on your stanchions.

I do it

That is how I rig my vang as a preventer. I suppose it puts some strain on the stanchion, but it works for me. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty 1981 H33

I do it too

I agree that there would be less stress on the stanchion if the preventor was rigged futher aft on the boom. I was thinking of using a sliding bail origionally intended for reefing as an attachment after fixing it by the companionway. I would also use it for the mailsail sheet to get it out of the way.
