Boom Topping Lift

I am trying to find out if a topping lift is needed for the vega. My
boat has (when docked) the main halyard rigged as a topping lift, but
obviously this is used to hoist the main when sailing. There isn't
another lift there, but I do have a ridgid boom vang. is this taking
the place of my topping lift or am I missing something?

I guess a ridgid boom vang will do; you can always use the main halyard for extra lift like when you have a tent over the boom.

I think the main advantage of having a boom topping lift (as well
as/instead of) a rigid boom vang is that when reefing you can first
heave on the topping lift to depower (scandalize) the mainsail which
makes it easier to tighten in the reefing line to outhaul the sail.

When motoring into berth after dropping sails I heave the boom up with
the topping lift so that aft end is above head height - keeps it out of
the way and improves vis.
