Hi Hunter owners and sorry for bothering you with basics as follows... Could someone tell me if while on sail, the line attached from the top of the mast to the end of boom must be removed as it interfere with the mainsail when tacking? This line has the function of a backstay during sailing and must be secure to the boat (if so, how?) or it is just a line to keep the boom from falling when the main is lowered? How do you relief trailer brakes if they get stacked during launching maneuvers? I'm new on the 240 and will appreciate any help on this. Thanks and regards from down here. Topping lift

It is really there to hold the boom up when the sail is down. When you raise the sail, loosen the lopping lift enough so that it is slightly loose and does not hold the boom up. Let the sail leach hold up the boom. (Slightly floppy will do)

Get rid of it

The best way to do it is a rigid boom vang that will eliminate the topping lift all together. I hope Santa is good to me this year.

topping lift

You need to slacken it off when sailing other wise it wil catch, I do not like the topping lift as I either forget to sinch it up before reefing or dropping the sail or it flogs the sail in light winds. I have taken it off the back of the boom when sailing and yes forget to reattach, out on the head. Have to find out about the rigid boom. Have not heard of the brakes locking on the ramp, so not sure what your concern is. Happy sailing

garhauer vang

It looks like it will be a good year for Garhauer. I'm planning to put one on too. The topping lift combined with the big main is a pain! I did find a happy medium point this year where it wouldn't snag the battens when tacking and would hold the boom high enough with the sails down. I have forgotten to loosen, and snagged the end of the sail and also disconnected the lift and forgot I'd done so and dropped the boom right on the head of a guest!

Brake Relief

I have a 23.5 with surge brakes on the trailer. The 24 trailer may be the same. There's knob behind the ball socket on the trailer toung that you switch to an off position for backing. This should be switched before backing up and returned afterward to restore the surge brake function.
