boom rigging

WE have a Daysailer II and would like to know how to rig the boom so it stays up when the sail is down. There is a a metal piece with a hole in it on the end of the boom and we are not sure what that is used for. As you can tell we are new to sailing. Thanks for any help.

I don't know your boat...

...but there should be a topping lift running from the end of the boom to the top of the mast to support the boom and adjust its angle.

backstay?

If your boat has a backstay you can rig a pigtail secured to it above to boom that has snap shackle at the free end that goes into to plate at the end of the boom. To secure the pigtail use a threaded U bolt & about a foot of wire. The U bolt allows you to fool around with the location.

The DS 1 and 2 do not have a back stay. There is no back stay to attach the boom to. I have seen a paddle used to hold the boom up. The handle end is shaped to support the boom from below. It had a holder of some kind, near the tiller, to hold the paddle up.My DS 1 has a sissors arrangement of two strips of wood which fold down below the tiller when sailing, and fold up to support the boom from below when in the slip.
