a problem i have discovered: when i drop the main, i have to have someone clip the aft part of the boom to the aft stay clip, or else the boom will be in the cockpit. i have seen some C25's with a wire that will hold the boom up. is this hard to install? what is required? can i do it with the mast up? any help would be appreciated. ps you can email me at mjewell5@kc.rr.com as well

Rigid vang

You need a rigid vang. Kevin mentioned the Boomkicker. Garhauer Marine also makes a nice unit at a reasonable price. They will hold the boom up and allow you to control the sail better too.

You can install a topping lift for almost no cost, then use a boom-vang to shape sail. Type "topping lift" into your computer and follow instructions, or e-mail me and I'll tell/show you how. Novelman

topping lift

You can also set up a topping lift which consists of a light line that runs from a shackle at the aft end of the boom, up to a cheek block on the starboard side of the mast, then down to another cheek block at the base of the mast, and back to a cleat on the cabin top, where you can adjust it. [total parts: 2 cheek blocks, one lite line, one shackle, one cleat]

I am rather fond of my boom gallows

when I drop the sail the boom has a resting place and I have something to lean on.

I like the rig on my boat

Just run a cable from the mast head down to a few feet above the end of the boom. Run a small but strong rope from the end of the boom threw a block on the cable then back to the end of the boom. Tie the rope off on a small cleat. You will be able to easily adjust the boom height and if you are under sail for long periods you can just pull the pin on the boom and tie the rope to the rear stay so it won’t whip around in seas. If you disconnect it, don't forget to reattach it before lowering the sail or you’ll be back in the same boat. In two years I have not disconnected it once and I have never dropped the boom. Just to let you know I have only been sailing for 2 years and this is my first boat, but I have seen many different rigs and mine is simple, cheap and affective

what about the pop top?

how would the boom lifts work with the pop top on my C25? are they mounted high enough to be out of the way? if so, then this may be the way to go. otherwise, the topping lift looks like the way to go. thank you all for your advice.

I dont know about the pop top

but on my 1975 Pearson P33 the boom is to low on the mast for a boomkicker. I have talked to several manufacturers and they have all said that the kicker would not work for me. I believe that the boom on a c25 is low so that is another consideration.

I once had a C25...

...with the backstay cable. It was a 1984. It held the boom high enough to keep it off of the pop top with no problem. Installing one shouldn't be too much od a problem. All it requires is to tie off the mast to the back of the boat with the main halyard, nndo to the backstay, slip on the "double" compression fitting with the 14" (approx) hold-cable installed. Then crimp the fitting at the prioper level. Hook everything up and you are good as gold. Just remember to unhook it before after you raise the main and you sail the boat. Or...you can go the Topping Lift route - no problem.

I use a boomkicker

I bought a boomkicker. I bought it just for lowering main or reefing the main. I did not like the wire on the back stay to hold boom up. I still have it there as back up if I need it.

You'll find a lot of good advice and friendly people at the Catalina 25 Association website. But, the topping lift is probably what you'll need rather than a rigid vang in order to use the pop-top.
